Patty: "Never Stop Learning"

After 28 years of professional experience and a diehard clientele, Patty Gibbons could have easily rested on her professional laurels, but instead decided to challenge herself ( and her fans) by joining the HeaD AreA team. Of course, we couldn't be happier.

A love of theatrical makeup brought Patty to Maison De Paris, but an underlying passion for hair kept her coming back. An apprenticeship under Don Merlino is where she began to understand the fundamentals of hair styling. Merlino was her first great teacher and gave her not only an unprecedented understanding of classical techniques but also that education would be the backbone of her career."He taught me the core principles of precision hair cutting."

Making to most of every opportunity, Patty continues to set herself apart from her peers by instilling a vast array of influences and experiences into her work. Early on in her career, she had the chance to work with Horst Rechelbacher, of Aveda fame, when he was launching Aveda to the Phildelphia area."He taught me to do prep work for him to his specifications, which were very high, he pushed me to go out of my comfort zone in order to get to the next level of quality work. I maintain that level of perfectionism in my work to this day. I found him to be a very influential force in my early years, and I carry those principles with me."

Gibbons honed her skills at top salons in Philadelphia, New Jersey and Miami. After some time, she began to feel like the day to day was getting in the way of her quest to better her own talents,"I wanted to get back to the craft of hair and did extensive research online to find a salon that shared my passion for hair cutting as an art form."

Her search led her to HeaD AreA in June of this year. A risky move, but one that seems to be paying off for all involved. ," I enjoy working for HeaD AreA because everyone is uniquely talented and has their own way of expressing themselves through the work that they do. I am truly in the artist's workshop/studio atmosphere that I had hoped to find. I have been re-energized to do my best possible work everyday."

The clientele she established over that time is nothing if not loyal and with good reason. Patty is fully committed to her clients, constantly evolving her process to attain even better results for those who affectionately call her "my Patty". They have absolute trust in her ability to deliver flawless hair every single time. "I am inspired by my clients' personalities, the feelings I get from them and how I see them at their best, I try to create that ideal for them."

Kerri, the Queen of Color

Hair color can change everything. Finding the perfect hue for you and your life is no small feat. Anyone who has rolled the dice and lost can tell you that. There are so many intricacies to color in all it's forms. Warm, cool, subtle or drastic, it requires a master of the medium to sort out something that hugely personal and important. Which is why a colorist like Kerri Fawley has developed such a diehard client list. This lady is devoted to the art of color and it shows.

Coloring and cutting came so naturally to Kerri that at the ripe old age of 14, she knew she wanted to train as a stylist. Starting her apprenticeship at 15 while still in high school, she was a full fledged stylist while her classmates were still figuring out how to best fit a case of beer into a dorm fridge.Learning on site at a salon, Fawley's education was as hands on as possible. her three year immersion transformed her view of hair and the process of color.

For the next ten years, Kerri dedicated herself to learning everything there was to know about the science of color. It is her passion, her obsession and we get to see the glorious results daily.

What is it about color specifically that intrigues you?

That you can bring out the best in someone's features and hair with hair color. It changes so much of someone's appearance.

Are you partial to one color family?

I love all hair colors and creating the perfect color for individuals who fall into those families. Identifying whether someone is cool, neutral or warm is the number one most important thing to remember when formulating their color.

Any tips for changing color? Any things to avoid?

I am all for changing it up but it has to be done right!

Have a conversation with your colorist about what you would like to change and come up with a plan. Keep in mind, if you are lightening, it may take 2-3 visits to get the color you want while maintaining integrity within the hair.

Where do you think color is heading? What is the next big trend?

I try not to go 100% trendy in any hair color but instead incorporate new or fun elements to enhance one's personal style. I think the extreme contrast of ombre is gone and in its place, people are going for tonal differences using the ombre technique, but not so much light and dark.

As with most types of genius, it really is a amazing just to watch Kerri's process. HeaD AreA stylists frequently call on her encyclopedic knowledge when formulating their color, so odds are if you've have your locks dyed here, she's had a hand in the resulting hue. Her ability to dissect and translate the technical and scientific aspects of hair coloring have led her to an educational role within the salon. Kelly: HeaD AreA at Our Best

HeaD AreA believes that education is the foundation of everything. We are at our best when taking on a young stylist and giving them the tools to help them flourish. One of our favorite success stories is Kelly Hursh. A brilliant young stylist and a key member of the head area team for over three years, Kelly exemplifies what we strive to create.

Experimenting on the heads of friends, Kelly's passion for hair was sparked in her early years not only by her inherent talent but as she puts it,"I seemed to be the only one (while doing box color dye jobs) who was capable of not leaving spots and ruining the counters!"

A part-time job at salon in high school solidified her career choice. "I fell in love with the flow and change of it all."

Kelly packed up and moved to Philadelphia in order to attend Jean Madeline Aveda Institute. She worked as an assistant in various salons while attending school full time, leaving little time to explore her new city and make it her home. She poured herself into learning as much as possible and honing her skills, quickly ascending to the top of her class.

The funny thing is, Kelly almost left the profession before we even got to meet her. Disillusioned and disenchanted by her experiences at a handful of other establishments, Kelly was ready to pack in her shears for good when a chance run-in brought her and HeaD AreA together.

"I had a brief lapse in my confidence of career choice: this city can be tough. I had moved here alone, not knowing anyone and it got rough."

A former instructor, friend and HeaD AreA stylist convinced her to spend a day at our salon, just to see if maybe this was the place she'd been searching for...thankfully it was. By the end of that day, she accepted a full-time position and in no time became an integral part of the team.

It's Kelly's balance between technical precision and creativity that sets her apart from others in the field. She has cultivated her unique style through her years of study. Under the direction of HeaD AreA's education team ( led by Lee Clapson), she has built creativity and personal flair onto the foundation of the classical training. It is that classical, technical training that is paramount to the education at HeaD AreA. Kelly has so fully absorbed this, that she has taken on a teaching role within the salon, helping new stylists find their footing and perfect their craft. She has a confidence and easy nature that puts her clients at ease. This girl knows her stuff and is not one to rest on her laurels. She continues to explore new techniques and widen her range of expertise.

Her main love of the moment is her straight razor. A finicky and unforgiving tool, Kelly wields it with amazing deft and skill, using it to catapult her cutting to the next level. "I always admired the straight razor and the benefits of using one. I got the cajones to pick it up one day and didn't look back. It took my haircuts to another plane."

Whether it be the straight, the scissors, or the color brush, Kelly has a gift for transforming ordinary hair into something amazing. She is excited about hair and it's an infectious energy. This is something any of her loyal clients can attest to, as they trust their locks to no else.

Love Your Hair: The Thin Hair Chronicles (A Long Story)

Thin hair cannot be long hair. The longer it is the thinner it looks. And the weight, oh the weight will pull your precious few strands out right at the roots! Keep it short, the shorter the better. Growing those thin locks any longer than chin length is a terrible idea.

At least that is what I always believed.

So, I had short hair. Forever and ever, amen. I did it all. Good bad and in between, any trendy short cut from 1993- 2008 made an appearance on my head. I put in my time and got intimate with the classics- Jean, Louise, Mia, Audrey: I paid homage to them all. I had the best time with the short, I ran the gamut and then I did it again.

But I always wanted a blow out and a ponytail, or braids, or a top knot, or hair just to let hang down and hide me from the world if I chose to do so. I mean, come on, short hair is great but some days this face needs some follicular camouflage.

So about a year into working at HeaD AreA, I mustered up the courage to ask the hair gurus that surrounded me if perhaps, maybe (pretty please) long hair was something I could have one day. (Please keep in mind my last two hair stylists had given me the old "you suddenly have three heads" face at this query).

Knock me over with a feather, they said YES. It would in no way be simple and would take a great deal of patience, but my flimsy locks could and would be long.

First things first: long hair, short hair, thick hair, or thin hair; it is all about the right cut. For my hair, that cut needs movement achieved through deftly placed layers. Left to its own devices, my locks will strictly adhere to the laws of gravity and hang as close and flat to my head as they possibly can. To counterbalance the tendency, Lee sliced delicate layers into my chin length cut, letting the shape of my head dictate the length of the hair. This method plumped up my meager locks and banished any flattening weightiness. The result was a sleek polished style with the versatility necessary to keep me from chopping it all back off.

Versatility was the name of the game as my hair slowly gained length, Lee made sure to add movement and life with subtle layers and his legendary precision cutting.

I cannot emphasize enough how important a cut is when your hair is fine and limp, no matter what end result you are trying to achieve. Talk to your stylist about your problem areas, ask them about your texture, your hair's natural movement. Each appointment you have with them is a chance for you to get to know your own hair better, so make the most of this.

Oh yeah, that sure is a ponytail (February 2010)

These cuts alone could have been all that I needed to get the long lengths I craved, but my coworkers had more in store for me and my longing for length. Products. Bumble and Bumble products of all shapes and formulations that allowed me to achieve unheard of feats with the tendrils I was cultivating. I relied heavily (and still do) on the possibly magical Bb Thickening Serum.

This little gem was introduced right around the same time I became determined to have long locks. Needless to say, we became fast friends. Massaged into roots once or twice a day, the serum will plump each and every hair shaft adding more heft to overall hair. I started seeing results after just a few weeks. My ponytails got a little bulkier and my hair lifted higher at the crown without having to defy to laws of physics and the upkeep couldn't be easier.

Since it penetrates the scalp, you can throw the serum in clean or dirty hair, with or without other products and either in the morning, at night or with high tea if you're so inclined. Here's the thing; I get a failing grade in sticking to any sort of "good for you habit". I am a lazy lady who cannot be bothered to exercise or dust or clean my darn make-up brushes if it even marginally interferes with my doing nothing. So when I say this is an easy thing to do for your hair, be assured that it is a baby step above breathing on the simplicity scale. Seriously.

The fringe effect (August 2010)

Armed with my new best friend, Thickening Serum and the rest of Bb family, I made the most of the next two year. Road testing the entire line on my ever changing hair. I can honestly say that this line has at least one (usually several) product for every head of hair, not matter the length, width or bend. Your stylist is more than happy to walk you through whatever product catches your eye, and to recommend what they most love with your hair. Ask away, you will be glad you did.

Houston, we have long hair (May, 2011)

So here we are are two year later and I have hair that cascades down past my shoulder blades, can be whipped up into all sorts of fantastical styles and can pull attention away from that giant pimple dead in the center of my face. I have achieved my long hair goal and I had little to nothing to do without it. It is all about the cut and the care. Finding the best stylist and the best product is the most effort we novices need to make. Turns out, not only can us thin haired folk have long hair, we can have really beautiful long hair.

Love Your Hair: The Thin Hair Chronicles

When I was all of nine, way back in the eighties, I wanted "mall bangs" more than anything on earth. Being that I was a fourth grader in a strict catholic school, this was a lofty goal, but I was determined. I mustered up my nine years worth of bravado and told my mother's hairstylist what I wanted to happen on my head. What I ended up with was a quasi mullet, with a short spiky top and straggly shoulder length sides. Glamorous*. The reasoning I was given for this interesting take on "mall bangs" was that I had thin, flat hair which wouldn't naturally have any sort of body save for layering it within an inch of its life.

Hmmph.

Thus began my love/hate relationship with these wacky follicles sprouting out of my head. They now had a diagnosis. Thin, flat and to be "dealt with". During the next 24 years, I have followed every piece of bad hair advice and almost always done the wrong thing regarding this mop.

However, I feel that I am learning and might even have what some would consider "nice hair". This is mostly to do with where I work, among a half dozen or so of the most talented stylists working today, than to anything I have done of my own accord. Now I would love to share my good fortune with others.

Hair we go:

Big Mistake # 1 Lighter Equals "Thicker"

I am natural blond. Sure it's dark blonde these days, but it was once a glorious shade of honey with flecks of caramel and platinum. So it made sense for me to dump lightener on my head from age 16 on, right? Especially if the increasingly lighter shade was slowly starting the match the tone of my actual scalp... I mean that meant my hair looked thicker, right? Right?

Actually no. Lightening hair strips more than the color, it makes the strands appear thinner. Conversely, the darker hues add a bulk to wimpy follicles. JoJo (hair guru) compares it too an empty straw versus a full straw. The darker the color the plumper the appearance.

Armed with this knowledge, I am now a red head. Don't get me wrong, I love blond hair and I am gobsmacked daily by fair haired folks. For me, it just wasn't meant to be. The ginger hue is more flattering to my coloring, more befitting of my personality and just generally a better idea.

Let It Shine

Back before the cutting, the coloring, the heat styling, the perming (it's okay, we were all there) there was this hair. Hair that had life, bounce, an inner glow even. Hair that was as fleeting and magical as childhood itself.

Hair that had that shine. Remember?

Bumble & Bumble does, and that was the inspiration behind their new line – Let It Shine shampoo, conditioner and Shine On Finishing spray – that manages to add maximum punch, yet leaves hair full of body and life. Shine on, indeed.

With the help of veteran HeaD AreA model Yoko and new face Allison, Lee takes the staff through the finer points of our newest styling addition.

In need of some freshening and a more refined cut, Lee shampoos and conditions Allison's long locks with Bb Shine (This lightweight cleansing duo is ideal for all hair types who want to add sheen without weighing hair down) and begins to map out his plan.

Lee reshapes Allison's heavy fringe to unify it with both her facial structure and the rest of her hair. Precision cuts and an unwavering hand are key to achieving this harmonious effect.

Once her fringe is properly (and beautifully) landscaped, Lee tackles the bulk of Allison's mane. Losing minimal length, Lee continues his refinement by razor cutting long layers into the back and sides of the hair.

This deceptively intricate cut is elevated by Lee's deft use of Bb Shine On Finishing Spray. He starts by spraying the product into his hands and working it through Allison's hair from mid-lengths to ends (Shine On is a silicone-based product and should be applied sparingly and added in stages) smoothing and building as he goes.

The end result is healthy, gorgeous hair with plenty of natural movement and a weightless finish.

Yoko's coarse texture serves as an ideal platform to showcase the versatility of the Shine finishing spray. Again, starting with a few spritzes into his hands, Lee works the product through Yoko's locks, smoothing and shaping the hair to accentuate the lines of her cut (featured on this blog back in March) for a dramatic take on shine.

Lee then breaks down the glass finish with even more product, combing it through and rough styling it for a tousled bed-headed effect.

Even with a healthy dose of the Spray, Yoko's hair is still light and malleable this second time around.

Texture

Grit. Oomph. Chutzpa.

Thanks to Bb Texture, we can now use these words to describe not only our attitudes but our hair as well.

The HeaD AreA team was lucky enough to have a hands on product knowledge class taught by our Creative Director, Lee and our wonderful Bb rep, Judith. These demonstrations are a vital part of our overall understanding of how to get the most out of our product line and your hair.

For the first part of his demonstration, Lee used Bb Texture as more traditional styling tool, working it through Mindy's damp curls and then using a diffuser to remove excess moisture.

The result is loose, relaxed waves appear look effortless. Hair (un) dressing indeed.

Being the consummate boundary pusher, Lee went a vastly different route for his second demonstration. This is Audrey, naturally beautiful with a great sense of style, her fuss-free look needed a bit a of a boost.

After cleansing and towel drying her hair Lee added his first dime-sized amount of Texture, working it through roots to ends, then spritzing with Prep for a touch extra moisture.

Audrey's hair is then smoothed out, lightly sectioned and the cutting begins.

Precision slices enliven the fine layers around Audrey's face and make the most out of each strand.

Bb Texture's inherent moisture allows Lee to cut organically and let the hair's natural bend dictate the layers.

As the weight is lifted from her locks, Audrey's hair becomes fuller and the color more defined. Had the cut ended here, it would have undoubtedly been a success, however product inspiration spurred Lee to take it further.

By wefting, or carving into the hair at the root and mid-lengths, Lee is able to create a whole new element of inner lift and body into the cut.

The result is tousled and somewhat deconstructed, allowing the focus or the style to be Audrey's natural texture.

Bb Texture is a versatile product and works well with absolutely every hair type.It performs best when worked into damp hair and doesn't really require any sort of heat styling. Use as a change from Surf Spray, Sumotech or Defining Creme or mix it with Bb foundations along with virtually any other Bb product. A razor cut is divine. Using a blade, a comb and the smallest about of product, it is hairstyling in its purest form. Simplicity. Precision. The delicate edges lift and layer hair in a way scissors just cannot mimic; pulling the weight out of a heavy curl and making-face framing pieces completely organic.

Remi's hair lends itself wonderfully to this technique. Left long and layerless, her curls get lost and so do the delicate features of her face. Lee deftly lifts away all the excess bulk, leaving her and her curls lighter and brighter.

JoJo Clapson, Lee Clapson and Stephen McFalls opened a small salon five years ago today. They strived to build something through education and a keen focus on the fundamentals of the craft. It was a risky move, but one that paid off not just for them, but for the many stylists they've taught over the years.

Stay Inspired: Yoko & Lee

This is Yoko and Lee. From her first visit to his chair in 1995 all the way through last Friday, the two have pushed the boundaries of hair cutting techniques. The constant evolution of their ideas translates to never repeating a cut in over 15 years. As both stylists and clients know, this is a unique and envied relationship. Watching their ideas unfold is a amazing thing and I'm happy to be able to share a bit of it here.

I can't thank Lee and Yoko enough for allowing me to photograph this process. It's inspiring to see people have so much fun with their creativity. Hopefully, this will be one of many posts about them.

The Gentlemen's Turn

A great haircut is a powerful thing. It can be that missing puzzle piece that finally makes sense of the rest of your appearance, your day, your life. Ask almost any woman and she can tell you her best haircut experience. More often than not, the person responsible for said cut is still snipping her locks to this day. We know the power and we love it. Can the same be said for most men? Sadly, I'm not so sure.

We'd like to change that, because everyone deserves great hair.

This week's cutting class featured an all male crew of models. After years of DIY cuts, these four courageous men put their hair in the hands of stylists Lindsay and Brianna. Under the guidance of HeaD AreA educator JoJo, the group discussed and decided where they wanted to go style-wise.

HeaD AreA is education. Over 50 combined years in this business have produced a masterful set of tools that every stylist must tackle before they hit the floor. You've got to walk before you run.

This is Brianna, who joined our team just last week. Today, our stylist Kitt is taking her through the Flat Brush Blow Dry.

This is one of several key blow drying techniques utilized in every service at the salon. This style of blow drying, done with a flat Denham brush and a blow dryer, leaves the hair smooth and super shiny.

Like many things in hair styling, it looks deceivingly simple. Hair is manipulated in particular ways to maximize body while maintaining a smoother than silk finish. Learning the angles and patterns to allow for such feats take patience and practice practice practice.

The results are not only gorgeous, but they prepare the hair for any other sort of styling the client might need. This blow is a staple at photo-shoots, runway shows, and (of course) at HeaD AreA.

It is now the end of a very long, very busy week. Before I get some much needed rest, I thought I'd share a little piece of what makes us love our work. This is far from the only reason we come into the salon day after day, but it a very important part of what makes HeaD AreA tick.

Just when I thought no one had anything left to give, the last haircut of the week became an impromptu cutting class.

Our education head, Lee, and his client Linda, decided to take her existing cut just a few steps further, grabbing the interest of staff members. Before the first section was completed an audience had formed.

After many snips, questions and photos; the final results speak for themselves.

Linda loved her hair and seemed to really enjoy the whole experience.

As did we, but I think that goes without saying. Seeing things move from concept to reality on a daily basis is the driving force behind what we do and why we walk through the big red door everyday.

As we struggle to get through this never-ending winter, I find it helps to plot out what comes next. Spring 2011 is bright, bold with more than a nod to 70's relaxed easy style. What does this mean for hair? Our take is a no (well, little) muss no fuss approach. Hair's natural texture will come shining through. This is either great news, or scary news, depending on you and your hair. However, I assure you, with the right cut and products, even the trickiest texture can look fabulous.

HeaD AreA model Charlotte exemplifies this notion. Her loose natural wave has a tendency to fall flat in dryer months. Working with her facial features and natural texture, stylist Kelly gives her a series of weight eliminating layers so that her curls spring rather than fade. By leaving a little length and weight in Charlotte's fringe, they appear natural and a true extension of the cut.

To achieve the above look, we've used Bumble & Bumble's Curl Conscious Shampoo & Conditioner, followed and all over mist of Prep, a healthy amount of both Defining Creme and Holding Foam applied tips to roots. Brilliantine was applied after a diffused blow-dry to further polish and enhance texture.

Red is hot. Way hot. Possibly hotter than it's ever been. Maybe this is because natural redheads are endangered species, predicted to be as early as 2060. Maybe it's because of recent advances in red color formulation making it easier to hold onto that fresh pop of color. Maybe it's just because in a see of blond and brown, red will always get you noticed.

Styled by Kerri, HeaD AreA model Jean's fiery curls are a force to be reckoned with. Starting with an all over golden red base color, Kerri then freehand painted on both copper and gold highlights (look for a more in-depth post about this process soon) to the ends of curls. The finishing color touch came from a copper golden all over glaze. Bumble & Bumble Defining Creme gives the curls weightless control while Bumble & Bumble BB Shine amps up the golden sun dipped effect.
